Mahalo Hula Anya

Paper: Making Memories Great Escape
Stamps: The Greeting Farm, sentiment is Amuse
Prima Flowers, Dew Drops, Copics, Rhinestones, and EK Success Border Punch

5 years and 2 days ago I was in my bedroom at the Sorority house. I was getting ready to take a mid-term and turn in a paper. My cell phone rang and it was a number I didn't recognize. I just ignored it and I continued to get dressed. The caller left me a voicemail, so I picked up my cell phone and listened to it. It was my brother, Brien, and he was calling from the hospital. My mom had a brain aneurysm while she was driving to work and I needed to come home.

When my brother and Dad got to hospital, my mom was still conscious. They were prepping her for a craniotomy. After hearing what the doctor had to say, my Dad elected not to do the craniotomy. Many people criticized my Dad's decision, but he made the right one for our family. My mom was diabetic and had kidney failure. She was already doing dialysis twice a day at home and her health was already starting to fail. By the time I got home from school, my mom was in a coma. We had to wait for all of the anesthesia to wear off before we could take her off life support. It took about 48 hours for her to pass away.

Lucky for me, the last time I saw my mom was 5 days before I got that call. I came home for the weekend by chance...or some would say fate. With a full class schedule, the sorority, and dating Brent long distance, I didn't really come home too often. I hadn't been home since August, prior to that trip. My mom and I spent the weekend clothes shopping, crafting, shopping at Craft Warehouse, and buying me groceries at Safeway. When I said good-bye to her at Safeway, that was the last time I saw her conscious.

We had her funeral in Portland the weekend of Halloween. The week after, we went to bury her in Hilo, Hawaii. Both of my grandparents are buried there and there are 4 generations (including my mom) of my grandma's family there as well. I haven't been there since we buried her, but I plan to take Brent sometime within the next year or so. He's never been to Hawaii, so we'll make a vacation out of it and do fun things too. This will be my first trip to Hawaii, where I'll be staying in a hotel...and not at my grandparent's house. It's so weird to think about...especially since I spent summers there as a child.

To honor my mom's 5 year anniversary of passing today, I chose to make a card with Hula Anya. I got the Mahalo stamp at Amuse while I was there for the anniversary sale. She was born and raised in Hilo, so she loved anything to do with Hawaii. Except I couldn't ever get her to watch 51 Dates with me, lol. She loved Drew Barrymore too, so I thought I could really con her into it. And thankfully the Spam thing never rubbed off on me either...though I do love sushi!

If you made it through my whole story...thank you! Tell all your loved ones that you love them and cherish the moments you have with them! Everyone have a great Friday! I'm so happy it's almost the weekend!

  12. Sparkle, I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story and card. Talking about a sad moment could be very difficult but I believe it could also be healing. My heart goes out to you during your mom's fifth anniversary. Your card is just beautiful-- hula Anya is one of my favorites!

And boo on you, I love Spam! Just kidding- I know how bad it is :). Have fun in Hawaii! I hope your hubby has a wonderful time as well.

P.S. Being a nurse, I've seen how difficult it is for families to "let go" or make decisions that, to others, may seem "unkind.". It mustve been hard on your dad but I understand that he was thinking about what would have been your mom's quality of life. Take care, Sparkle. *hugs to you*

  36. TFS this beautiful story of your mother... I don't have a dry eye!

In November it will be 13 years that my mom had 2 strokes... I still remember the last time I seen her a few weeks b/4 this happened. She is still with us, but not the same mind or body. I'm SO happy to have her here, but still feel the mom I knew is gone.

Fantastic "Tribute" card and darling details!! Thanks for visiting my blog... :)

  39. OMG! I got a frog in my throat! Sniff, sniff! I wanna send you a big hug!!! What a touching story! I agree with you to never take family for granted and cherish them and let them know how much you love them. Sad that with the hustle and bustle of our lives, it's so hard to stop and remember to do that!!! Just take comfort knowing your mom is your angel watching out for you and your family and that one day you'll be reunited with her! All my aloha! When you're visiting the islands especially Oahu, please let us know, maybe we can do lunch! Hopefully I'm still living here, if not, there are so many of great craft friends here you can meet up with!

    Aloha!

As you probably know, I too lost my mom very unexpectedly and thankfully was able to enjoy some quality time before it happened. It's amazing how comforting that is.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, but your tribute to her is beautiful and comforting.

Thank you again for sharing and may you find comfort during this difficult anniversary.
